December 1988 Blairgowrie accordionist and entertainer, Tommy Newcomen, along with his wife Irene, decided to open a small record shop called The Music Box, in their home town of Blairgowrie in the heart of Perthshire. Over the years they have traded from six different shops in the town, expanding each time. Now The Music Box, Musicboxscotland.co.uk, offers one of the biggest and best selections of Scottish and Irish recordings in the country on cassette, CD, video and DVD
Tommy, who has been associated with the Scottish music scene for over thirty-five years, says that despite the change in the way people buy their music, with the introduction of the Internet and online stores, his customers still enjoy browsing through the thousands of recordings on offer because they know they will always get the best of attention. Anyone who walks in to The Music Box is amazed at the stock on view; many comment that it is the best selection they have ever seen. Apart from one of the biggest and best selections of Scottish and Irish music in the country, the shop, which has been located by the bridge in town centre “The Wellmeadow” for the last few years, has recordings for all ages and musical tastes from Jimmy Shand to Tina Turner. Other CDs and tapes in stock include Irish Country, Bothy, Country, New Country, Line Dance, Golden Oldies, Big Band and Jazz, Singers from the 30s to the 70s, Classical, Comedy, Party and Sing-a-Long, Rock n Roll, Easy Listening and chart music (to order). The selection on offer means that the shop has become a mini tourist attraction with customers returning time and time again from all parts of the country.
Despite entertaining tourists and playing at clubs and functions most nights of the week, Tommy still serves in the shop seven days a week during May and September. With the help of his wife and family, he also promotes live Scottish and Irish shows. Over the last few years these shows have included names such as Billy Anderson and Albany, The Tartan Lads, comedian and singer Eddie Rose, Jim Reid, Da Fustra, Fintan Stanley, Shawn Cuddy, Dominic Kirwan, Bambrack, Sean OFarrell, Ann Breen, Mary Duff, Paddy OBrien and many more. Tommy says it is a great tonic to see the audience reaction to the live shows and to know that they are helping to keep the Scottish and Irish music to the fore.
One of the most successful shows is the Tuesday Blairgowrie Highland Night, which Tommy organises and performs at from April to the end of September. This show is held in the towns Angus Hotel and has gone from strength to strength since it started in 1999.
Tommy is also involved in the recording scene, and has now made several cassettes, CDs, videos and DVDs on the Irish A-One record label and his music has been used on many scenery videos and DVDs produced by the border based company A.T. Videos.
The Music Box has survived through the years because of our attitude to the music and our interest in keeping our customers happy – says Tommy. Because of his passion for Scottish and Irish music, and indeed his interest in all types of music, he has always been able to offer his customers advice on recordings and he is always happy to try and help trace certain tracks or recordings.
Tommy hopes that by continuing to provide a good service and staging live music events, The Music Box will be around for many years to come, promoting Scottish and Irish music to a new generation.
If anyone would like further information about The Music Box or the live music events planned they should contact Tommy at The Music Box, Wellmeadow, Blairgowrie, Perthshire, PH10 6NQ or Telephone 01250 875424 or 01250 874303
